LARGE GOLD FILIGREE AND JEWELED 1930s PANCAKE COMPACT Lovely Inside & Out
What a glamorous 1930s compact! It's really big, measuring 4" in diameter. It's also quite heavy because of the wonderful gold metal filigree and the 18 glittering faceted jewels in the center of the lid. Compacts like these that are big and sparkly and bejeweled were very popular in the early '30s, when the country was in the middle of the Depression and craved anything reminiscent of the luxury of bygone days. The entire lid is covered with an overlay of the filigree, with a beautiful motif of beaded leaves and flowers. In the center is a big circle of brightly colored glass stones in lots of colors: aquamarine, deep blue, bright red, emerald green, soft violet, and a circle of six glittering clear stones. No stones are missing and all are nice and bright. No damage to the gold filigree either! The sides are smooth bright gold with no wear.
The back has a marvelous gold sunburst design with rays bursting out toward the edge from the center. The hinge is tight and the large clasp closes with a satisfying snap. Marked on the clasp MADE IN U.S.A.
Inside, the huge mirror is beveled and has only a tiny bit of hazing, no cracks or chips and no silvering loss. Below, the base of the powder well is white and the edges a glowing gold. The pristine sifter is edged in lustrous white satin and has clearly never been used. The puff has soft pale pink velour on the bottom and is topped with lovely pale peach-gold satin faille in perfect condition. You couldn't ask for a better example of bold '30s glitz in a Depression-era compact, and with the condition so superb, you would NEVER guess that it is at least eighty years old!
